Bernie Sparkes
Bernie Sparkes Collection

Bernie (Sparkie) Sparkes, was born on October 15th , 1940 in Claresholm Alberta. He grew up on a farm and spent his youthful years engrossed in all sports. As a child he would spend countless hours down at the town curling rink throwing rocks while waiting for his father, who was the Icemaker.

Bernie would eventually go on to help their High School win the Provincial Championships in 1958. Throughout his career, Bernie went on the win 14 Provincial Curling Championships, 3 Brier Curling Championships and 3 World Curling Championships. At present Bernie holds several Brier records. As a youngster, Bernie’s dream was to play professional baseball. He was the captain for the teams that went on to win the Canadian Pony Championships in 1955, and the Western Canada Babe Ruth Championships in 1956. He would later get a tryout with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1958. He would eventually make curling a priority in his life.

For all his sports accomplishments, Bernie was elected into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in 1974, the Alberta Curling Hall of Fame in 1978, the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and also the Lethbridge Hall of Fame.

Painting for Bernie was not a part of his life until 1986, when he inherited his mother Daisy’s oil paints after her death. Painting in oils and watercolours is only a hobby for Bernie. Self taught he started painting animals and nature, and later transferred his love and knowledge for the game of curling onto canvas. He tries to bring into his paintings the emotional feelings of someone engrossed with curling. He produces Limited Edition prints of his work so that others may recall pleasant memories. His last painting “Memories” hopefully enables curlers to recall good times.

Bernie is now retired and living in Chilliwack, B.C. with his wife Laura. He fills his leisure time golfing, painting and gardening.
